I maintain a regular back-up regimen. I use ChronoSync on my Macbook Pro to copy data to an internal drive on my desktop G5. I also have Time Machine (for incremental back-ups) and SuperDuper (for fully bootable backups) running on both Mac Pro and Dual 2GHz G5 desktop machines. But what I haven’t prepared for is off-site back-ups. In light of the recent wildfire arson in Florida, I’m thinking it’s time I give off-site backups some serious thought. And so I wanted to open the floor up for suggestions and ideas on how to do this.
What’s the best method for creating off-site backups? External drive? An online back-up like Mozy or Amazon S3? Thanks in advance for your input.

May 14, 2008 at 5:20 pmDepending on size, you can copy your full backups to DVD or CD once a week, month, or whenever you do them and then store those in a safety deposit box. Keep a couple months worth there. Just one suggestion.

May 14, 2008 at 5:25 pmI’m personally a fan of S3 using JungleDisk. Pretty simple way to manage backups. Haven’t had a problem thus far.
I also like the cost scales nicely… just pennies a month. Rather than pay a flat fee for something I barely use.

May 14, 2008 at 5:50 pmI like S3 / Jungle Disk – wasn’t even aware of that as an option. And I also like the idea of putting backups in the Safety Deposit box (maybe have two back-up drives – and swap them out for back-ups every 2 months). Thank you both for your suggestions!

May 14, 2008 at 10:49 pmI use the JungleDish/S3 match-up as well. It is nice to schedule the backups and not have to worry about it. You should still maintain physical backups on a regular basis (which I am too lazy to do).

May 15, 2008 at 5:23 amInternet back-up is always the best solution.
Keeping an security box will help in case of fire, but not in cease of stealing or if it got stuck under ruble.
One thing to keep in mind is that is encrypted, or at least over an secure connection.
I make back-ups everyday using an Internet back-up whit automatic schedule, works like a charm.
