A few weeks ago I wrote about inverting my laptop stand. While changing the orientation of the stand improved the viewing angle of my MacBook Pro’s display, it also made for a less practical overall experience.
Typing wasn’t so much of an issue as my laptop is tethered to an external keyboard, but it did present itself as a nuisance each time I needed to use Touch ID. But the biggest issue was visibility. The raised height of the stand created a viewing issue wherein part of the MacBook’s display would obstruct the external display behind it.
Not ideal.
After dealing with the issue for a few weeks, I made the decision to look for a more practical solution. Enter the Psitek Portable Laptop Wedge.
This $14US all metal accessory creates a stable angle for my laptop, making it much more comfortable to type on. The raised surface also leaves more room for airflow beneath the MacBook Pro.
The box itself reminds me a little of Ikea’s packaging. It’s simple and minimalist.

The product itself is made of an aluminum alloy with an anodized finish. The Psitek’s base is sturdy and features a handy ruler, while the top surface has a protective silicone gel pad for protecting your laptop’s finish from scratches. I’m not sure if I’ll ever use the ruler, but it’s nice to have around should the occasion arise.

The Psitek wedge measures approximately 12″ x 2.5″ x 1.4″ and weighs 260 grams. It does not fold or collapse. I found the build quality to be excellent. The Psitek laptop wedge is light enough for me to tote in my backpack, but sturdy and stable enough to withstand the hammering force of my keystrokes. No matter how much I typed, the laptop stayed put on the laptop wedge. No wiggle, no flex, no sliding.

The Psitek laptop wedge keeps my MacBook Pro low enough so it doesn’t block my display, while also making Touch ID easier to access.
The only limitation I’ve found is the fixed angle and the lack of height adjustment; what you see is what you get. For my use case, I’m happy to concede on these tradeoffs.
I found this product to be so useful, I purchased another one for my FrugalMac.
Inverting my old laptop stand solved one problem while creating a few new ones. The Psitek wedge gives me what I’m really after: a comfortable typing angle without unnecessarily raising the MacBook’s display. For $14, it’s a simple solution – and the fact that I bought a second one probably says more than anything else I could write.
