Below is the process work for a commissioned PC Weenies sketch. For a traditional pen and ink drawing, I start off with creating a rough sketch using Corel Painter. It’s faster for me to revise digitally, so almost all my drawings start out this way.
Once I’m satisfied with the concept, I take the printout of the digital pencils and, with a ColErase non-photo blue pencil and my desk’s built-in light box, I tighten the lines onto Strathmore 100 lb paper:
Here’s what that looks like:
Once I’ve blue-lined the entire drawing, I use PrismaColor Premier brush pens for inking. For solid-black fills, I use a wedge shaped PrismaColor Premier pen. I use a Copic gray marker and assorted PITT pens for shading.
Inks in progress (it’s important to keep a steady hand!):
Here’s the final drawing!
Here’s my art desk, all tidied up for this photo:
Want your very own custom PC Weenies sketch? The easiest way to get one is to order an Artist Edition of “PC Weenies: Rebootus Maximus”. Each drawing is personalized and stamped for authenticity. And there you go!
If you have any questions regarding my technique, making webcomics, I’d be happy to answer them on the blog. Send your e-mails to me at pcweenies@gmail.com.
