March 22, 2011 at 9:01 amHey Krishna,
We have meet before in MegaCon last year, I’m a on-site Professional Computer Tech in Punta Gorda, FL, I don’t have a peeve to pick from around here but closest one is from my manager that every time I’m on the field taking care of a big issue, maybe with a server or driving to the place, the manager calls about another issue that was resolve and the paper work has been done, I’m driving and he wants me to call them, that always puts me in a bad mode with rage and stress. Is not like I’m at the office just watching news or reading pc weenies all the time.
I have a lot more of funny stories from around here, let me know if you need some.

March 22, 2011 at 10:08 amSoftware Piracy absolutely riles me up. Seeing all those people at school ripping off software from the internet. Students downloading Photoshop and calling themselves “Designers”. As a man who actually buys legal software in a country where piracy is so blatantly accepted I feel as if I’m in the minority. Oh well. They don’t know the joys of genuine software. :D

March 22, 2011 at 9:23 pmHiya Krishna.
A pet peeve of mine is when my friends treat grounding as if it was no big deal. Knowing that just a little shock to your part can ruin it, it makes me take every precaution before working with electronic parts. May not be that big of a deal to some but I would feel dumb if all of a sudden a part gets fried because i forgot to wear a grounding bracelet or grab a pipe or whatever.

March 22, 2011 at 10:59 pmMine is the fact that any given piece of hardware will always fail at the worst possible time.
Now, where are those links to FW drive cases…

March 23, 2011 at 7:06 amMine might be an odd one. I despise bloatware. I want a program that does X, not a program that did X now does, A-H as well when it is unnecessary. If I have a program for checking my email, it doesn’t have to control my cell phone music library as well (made that example up, to get my point across).

March 23, 2011 at 8:52 amMy biggest peeve is probably some of the students at my school. I go to an IT-school, were everyone gets to borrow a laptop for the duration, with an option to buy it when they graduate. My school also provides free wireless, for obvious reasons. Thing is, most students think “Hey! Free internet!” and download/torrent as much as they can while in school. The problem with this is that it slows down the network to painfully slow speeds at times. If I’m trying to download my current assigment from the public server, I don’t want it to take 2 mins for a 50 KB word document!

March 23, 2011 at 11:09 amMine is people using computers REALLY inefficiently.
Examples: Someone wants to copy a dozen holiday pictures from a memory card to a pc. And then selects them one at a time, right clicks, selects “Copy”, closes the window, goes to “My Documents”, then “My Pictures”, then right clicks, then pastes, then closes down the window, and then goes for the next picture. You can see where I’m going.
I watched my dad doing that for about 20 minutes before I cracked and did it for him. Years developing advanced GUI systems for that!
Also not using the scroll wheel.

March 23, 2011 at 8:14 pmYour dad got you to do the hard work, sounds like it was efficient enough for him… :)
As someone who works with other people all the time on computers, I hate when the people I’m with use the scroll wheel… It makes the lines of code jump up and down all over, but without seeing the cursor move or click on the scroll bar as a point of reference. When someone else uses the wheel I find it a lot harder to not get disoriented.

March 23, 2011 at 8:12 pmOne of my peeves is people not speaking in fairly exact terms… When someone says “the internet is down” I always ask “really? Or is it just our connection to it that’s down?”. Or if the connection goes down and they can’t get their email and say “Exchange is down,” without checking first to see if there’s any evidence of that, or what’s more likely, our connection is failing.
Since I’ve spent the last long while on teams developing web and internet based software, these distinctions are really important from those I work with, and they should know that.
Another one is when developers name variables x in their code, and it doesn’t hold a x-coordinate value. Very bad. Possibly a touch worse than when they name things like collections of products as c or a list of ingredients as l. Knowing that those objects contain products or ingredients is far, far more valuable to a future maintainer than knowing they’re a list or a collection, which is easy to see…

March 27, 2011 at 7:53 pmI suppose another peeve is people who don’t close their HTML tags properly… (yeah, I’m looking at you, yeah, you there in the mirror…)

March 23, 2011 at 8:26 pmOS Holy Wars. My gooshness that nonsense just bugs the bejimminies out of me. Look, people, you want a PC? Go for it! Want a Mac? Go buy one! Linux your deal? Have fun! Stop insisting that the other camps are slavishly following their Glorious Leaders, sit down, and do whatever it is you actually bought the system to do! Crikey that stuff gets on my nerves.

March 24, 2011 at 9:52 amBeing a PC user the (still) instability of Windows 7. Yes I know it is “better” than Vista but you’d think after all these iterations we’d have something near nirvana! Oh and incompatibility issues with hardware and driver issues and hard disk failures and…
ArrrOOooo!
