Enter the Motherboard

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” – Lao Tzu.

The first two parts of my forthcoming (hopefully) PC build arrived this week. Like Bob, I ordered parts before asking my wife. The first the Gigabyte Z97M-D3H motherboard, which will be the “veins” for the Hackintosh I’m building. Next up is the Thermaltake Core V21 microATX case for housing all of the components. I’ll be taking a closer look at both parts in a future blog post, once I’m confident that the build will proceed.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of my readers, in the span of a few hours, $110 has already been allocated towards this new PC build.

Furthermore, PCW reader Byron P. has also graciously agreed to donate a Corsair600 PSU, which should arrive sometime next week.

To raise money for the new machine, I’m opening my illustration commission slots up. For US readers who contribute $20 or more, I can offer a custom, signed 8.5″ x 11″ color print and desktop wallpaper (specify size) featuring a character of your choice. International readers who would like to contribute will receive a custom illustration in the form of a desktop wallpaper (please specify screen resolution).

If you would like to donate more than $100 for the build and have a specific art commission in mind, please get in touch with me at pcweenies@gmail.com and we can definitely work something out.

If you’d like to supply parts for the build, I’ve listed the specific parts I still need to get.

The impetus behind this project is fourfold:

1) to serve as an educational platform to introduce my 7 year old daughter Sonia on how computers work.
2) to build a machine capable of running Windows, Linux, and (yes) even OS X.
3) to share and document the entire process (from start to finish) and offer my insight into the entire process as a first time PC builder.
4) to reevaluate Linux and Windows operating systems with fresh eyes, as a long-time Mac user.

With your help, we can make this build happen. Thanks!

Like Bob, I ordered parts before asking my wife. Like Bob, do you have a shiner as a result?
