Today’s guest-star is Ben Huchley. His parents, Mike Kelley and Jill Huchital, purchased Ben’s guest-star appearance as a graduation gift for their son. Both Jill and Mike appeared in their own PC Weenies guest-star strip two years ago, for their anniversary.
To prepare Ben’s special guest-star strip, I asked Jill for a few general tech themes I could work with to customize the strip. She wrote:
Some notes on my son Ben (age 13): he loves math, wrote the software for his school robotics team, writes simulations to predict future behavior of rabbit populations, makes elaborate charts of Pokemon characters and battle scenarios. And, he hates expository writing. So maybe a good theme is, why do they insist on making him learn to write in English when it’s so much easier to express himself in these other languages?
After I drafted the idea and some preliminary sketches for Ben’s ‘toon, I sent a rough draft of the comic to Jill via e-mail for feedback. Once she OK’d the punchline, I proceeded to colors and inks.
Guest-starring is a super gift for your friends and loved ones. It’s also one of the several ways you can help support the PC Weenies comic online. The first PC Weenies book contained several guest-star comics, and the ones I create this time around have a good chance at making it into the next book I’m working on. So, what are you waiting for? :)
P.S. I’ll be at Kids Read Comics this weekend in Dearborn, MI. It’s a FREE event for the whole family! Click on the banner to see all the artists who will be in attendance and more info!
