Defying Conventions

I’ve championed the usage of solid state drives since I purchased my first Other World Computing SSD over a year ago. Since then, I’ve added another one to my Macbook Pro, and I haven’t looked back. Both machines are now 4 years old, but they’re still running like new machines.

I haven’t fully left platter based drives – they serve to hold the bulk of my data files; they also act functional back-up drives. Have you made the switch to SSDs yet? Do you plan to make the move soon? Drop your feedback in the comments below!

Update:

Here’s a video clip of me inking panel 4.

As a recent SSD user, I can vouch for this, big time. I was just installing OS on a new machine, and 5 seconds boot time can really blow you away. Of course, depends on the OS you’re installing, but I’m sure OSX and Windows both will probably bounce that login screen or desktop in front of you in a matter of seconds.
Great strip, Krishna. (now I’ll have to make my coffee before I boot up).

Not yet. I am broke :p

My friend made the move and I liked the boot up time on his computer though

I will never own another notebook without an SSD installed. The speed boost is just amazing – my 8460p notebook wakes up from full hibernation to a completely ready state in under 6 seconds.

I’m actually thinking of getting an SSD for my media center PC just so it boots faster – nothing worse than having to wait 5-10 minutes for a system to come to a completely ready state while you just want to watch a few dumb youtube videos or play a few Flash games on your big screen.

I started to read your comic, and then loud annoying music started blaring out of my speakers!!! Please, don’t start playing videos with loud music by default!

I’m not sure why that happened. The YouTube video was not set to auto-play. I tested it out to verify. What caused the music?

Out of curiousity, what browser are you using?

I have a question about the video. I see you are mostly zoomed in for detail. Do you have a mental picture of the panel as a whole, or are we missing something here? Maybe I’m doing something wrong (or perhaps I’m not as good an artist as you obviously are), but I always have to use two views of the same drawing (one showing the entire drawing and one zoomed in on the area I’m working on), so I don’t lose track of what I’m doing. With only one view I have to zoom in and out a lot.

I zoom in for detail, but then pull back to check for accuracy. I usually look at only one view at a time.

I have an SSD in my first-generation MacBook Pro. Even though it only has SATA-1 ports, I see a 7-8 second boot time on my computer. Nice.

Looking to upgrade to an SSD soon. I can buy a 64GB one right now but I’m saving up to buy a little bit more capacity. :)

Tell me what you think!
