This is the first time I’m reviewing a service that’s not directly tech related, but I felt compelled to share my experience nonetheless, because it’s an excellent service I want more people to know about – particularly if you live in the Tampa / Clearwater / St. Petersburg area.
We love our new home – it’s spacious with a great layout and plenty of windows to let the sunshine in. And we absolutely enjoy the solitude and beauty of the nature conservatory behind our home. But there was a minor, but annoying problem: during the daytime, our upstairs south-facing rooms became bathed in excessive sunlight.
It was so bothersome, that in our desperation, we resorted to putting up Christmas wrapping paper to temporarily stave off the extra light. (Not optimal, I know, but we were desperate.)
Blinds weren’t an option – I had no desire to cover up the beautiful view I’d already paid for. I asked around and a handyman friend suggested I look into window film treatments. With window film, I could keep the beautiful view and curb the effects of the excessive heat and sunlight. After some quick google-fu, I came upon Florida Film Solutions.
I explored their site, and what impressed me the most were the genuine testimonials of their service on their main page. The site also has an entire section devoted to testimonials. The company was also accredited by the Better Business Bureau and received very high ratings on Angie’s List. I gave Florida Film Solutions a call that evening.
The next afternoon, Blake (one of the co-owners of Florida Film Solutions) came by and gave us an estimate. He was friendly, punctual, personable and forthright. He demo’d two of the more popular film solutions his company offered and explained how the work would be done. He measured the windows and entered the square footage into his laptop, and with the aid of his portable printer, printed me an invoice with an estimate.
Based on the sheer weight of the positive testimonials alone, I gave Florida Film Solutions my business. We arranged to have the install a week later, and on the day of our appointment, Blake and his business partner Chad arrived exactly on time. We’ve dealt with other service companies in the area (I’m looking at you, Brighthouse), and they’ve always been late.
Both men were professional, polite and friendly. They explained exactly what they were going to do, and were very generous in answering all my questions during the install.
What really impressed me the most about these gentlemen was their attention to detail. They thoroughly cleaned our windows with a soap / water solution and squeegee, and removed any traces of excess silicon to insure a perfect seal between the film and the window. I took a few photos of the guys in action.
On the photo below, you can see the stunning difference between the untreated window (right) and the treated window (left). There was no bubbling, no wrinkles – the film fit was perfect, to the point where I couldn’t see a single trace of where the film ended against the window frame. The film we selected blocks 67% of the sun’s rays and keeps out damaging UV rays. While I can’t make a quantitative measurement on the claim, I know that the film’s doing its job.
Here’s my office after the treatment. No more glaring light!
Since the window film install, I’ve noticed that our upstairs area is much cooler in temperature. Their estimate matched their price, and I definitely feel like I got much more than what I paid for. The excessive sunlight is no longer a problem, and gone are the Christmas wrapping paper window “treatments”.
In summary, I was very impressed with Blake and Chad. They were punctual, professional, and went well above and beyond to make us truly satisfied customers.
Normally, I wouldn’t write about something as mundane as film treatments on this blog, but I really want to help spread the word about these guys because I really think they deserve your business. If you are in the Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater area and are looking for window film, Florida Film Solutions is the one to go with.
Florida Film Solutions gets a 5 out of 5 Bob Weiners.

February 10, 2011 at 1:13 pmGreat write-up Krishna! Living in Tampa as well, we’ve experienced the same type of heat problems – especially in the late afternoons on the west side of the house in summer. I’m going to look into this. Thanks!
