UP! Fair Auction Art: Process Work

I’m attending the UP! Fair in Lexington, Kentucky in a few weeks. The UP! Fair is entirely free to the public, and is sponsored by my cartooning friends Jerzy and Anne Drozd, Mark Rudolph, Kevin Cross, Shawn Robare and Sara Turner. A show like the UP! Fair is a true labor of love, put together for cartoonists by cartoonists, and I’m looking forward to being there.

Below is a traditional piece I completed for the purpose of the UP! Fair Art Auction. (All funds raised will go towards the operating expenses for the show.)

For this piece I worked in a completely different manner than I usually do. I started the composition on the computer and then developed the finished piece traditionally. Here’s the rough sketch I started out with, “roughed” in Corel Painter X.

homage to Frank Miller's Daredevil

Below, I used my lightbox and non-photo blue pencil to capture the essence of the composition by using a print of the digital drawing (on the right). Bob vs Ninjas!

I used a combination of brush pens and Microns to work through the composition. (No undos!)

…and here’s the final piece, fully inked:

This piece will be available exclusively at the UP! Fair auction. I had a tremendous amount of fun working on this piece, and explored a new technique that I am certain to incorporate into my future traditional pieces. Hope to see you at the UP! Fair!
