I’m in the midst of backing up all my Macbook Pro’s data as I write this.

My Macbook Pro (purchased in early 2006) is running Leopard, which was performed via an Archive and Install. Trouble is, ever since I moved to Leopard my machine’s been intermittently acting wonky. Now that I’m on vacation (I brought my Leopard install discs with me, being the geek that I am), I plan to reformat the internal drive and start afresh.

To that extent, I purchased a Maxtor OneTouch4 Plus this afternoon. I’m using SuperDuper 2.5 to back-up the entire contents of my internal drive. Once the back-up has finished, I plan to reinstall Leopard (via Erase and Install) on the Macbook Pro’s internal drive. I then plan on using Migration Assistant to bring back my settings, apps and data.

Ideally, I’d reinstall everything (apps, data, settings) from scratch – but I didn’t bring all my install discs (Painter, Photoshop, etc.). Thoughts and feedback on this approach? Have you used Migration Assistant to restore your apps after a Clean Install of Leopard?

Make sure you *de-activate* any Adobe software and deauthorize iTunes before making your backup. If you attempt to migrate and the programs are already activated, you will wind up calling Adobe to get your programs running again, and with iTunes you will either burn one of your 5 computer authorizations or you will have to reset them all.

If you have any other software that required “activation” you should also deactivate it before backing up.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jack. I wasn’t aware of the activation issues. Now I wish I’d saved my serial #’s beforehand so re-activation would be easy.

What a difference a clean install makes. The Macbook Pro is like a new machine. No beachballs – apps launch incredibly fast – WOW. Totally worth the effort. And Migration Assistant worked like a champ – just had to be patient and give it time to complete…
