Morning news…
Mac stuff: Woke up to find my Mac Pro was in this weird comatose state. It wouldn’t wake up until I physically hit the power button on the CPU. This has happened sporadically in the past, but now I’m getting concerned. Any Mac gurus out there know what could be causing this? I’ve applied all the software and firmware updates for this early 2008 model, if that makes any difference…
Car seat: The car seat’s installed (I did it myself!) – but I’m having the local firemen inspect it this morning (they offer that as a free service in some areas) to make sure everything’s okay.
Vacation: Tomorrow morning I’m heading off to Knoxville TN (home of the 1982 World’s Fair). I will have e-mail access, but I probably won’t check it until this weekend (Aarti’s made me swear not to step foot near technology for at least a few days and I’m going to do my best to oblige her wishes. We’ll see how that goes…). ;)
Comic stuff: If you’ve very recently signed up for the PCW Guest-Star Service (or are planning to), I should be able to begin working on your comic a few days after I return (June 29th). The site will continue to run with comics updating this week and next. After which I’m hoping to have created some new comics if I have time today. Otherwise, I may be running a week of “Greatest Hits”. Not sure just yet…
“Uncubed” may or may not update next week – it just depends upon whether or not I get to jump “back in the saddle”.

June 17, 2008 at 9:28 amRe your Mac: check your Energy Saver settings in System Preferences–you may have it set to put the hard drive to sleep when the computer sleeps.

June 18, 2008 at 7:29 pmTheala’s suggestion is good, but if it’s still happening I would reset PRAM and SMC then test, then isolate from external devices and test again. If it’s still there, nuke and pave (I know, I’m harsh but then backup and restore is easy on a mac and doubly so with Leopard and Time Machine). Issues with logic boards caused this kind of thing in early intel portables. Don’t mean to be a doomsayer, but just giving you a heads-up.

June 18, 2008 at 10:08 pmI have one of the early Mac Pros and am not sure which of the items fixed it, but mine would go to sleep and could not be awakened without shutting it down with the power button and restarting. The first thing I tried was a bunch of the early updates (didn’t do it). Then I read about a problem with drives. I had installed to additional drives and shuffled the order of the drives. When I put the original drive back in the first bay or the boot drive in the first bay then everything worked fine and I haven’t had a problem since. I’ll try to find which I did when I am near my machine again.

June 18, 2008 at 10:15 pmI’ll try resetting the PRAM and SMC (alas, I’ll have to wait 10 days until I can do that…) and see if that fixes the issue. As far as shuffling the drives goes, in my case, the HD that came with my Mac is still in drive bay 1…
hopefully the PRAM / SMC reset will fix things, if not I may have to try the other suggestions. (I never put the HD to sleep in the Energy Saver prefs.)
