Microcast 001: Instant Messaging

I spent a few moments this evening recording a short microcast on Instant Messaging. I’m using the Microcast to learn more about audio, with the full intent to create more microcasts if people want me to record them.

November 14, 2009 at 12:08 amMan I love the immediacy of the internet these days, talking about doing a microcast, and there it is. First off, your voice sounds like butter, seriously you’ve got a really good voice for podcasting.
As for IMing, I really don’t care for it for exactly the reasons you state. Whereas I’m all about starting conversations via my website and through podcasting, etc., IMing feels like the online equivalent of the pop-in. Personally I’m one of those people that relishing having control over how I choose to communicate with others. With IM I both feel like others are intruding on that by requiring a response right then, and I feel like I’m bothering/staking others, even if they don’t feel that way. I guess at the end of the day I don’t like the feeling that I have to respond, or give the signal that I’m snubbing, or vice versa. Too much pressure on the conversation for it to be worthwhile and natural…

November 14, 2009 at 12:21 amFirst off, I like the idea of the microcast.
Second, I am “logged in” to my IM clients on multiple machines throughout the day so usually people can’t get a hold of me because they’re talking to my home PC while I’m work or vice versa.
I also like the idea of replying to twitter/email on my own time but by also being pretty unreachable by IM my friends have learned to just send me a text which I prefer.
I gotta say, above IM or any other sort of distraction I gotta say I absolutely hate the freaking unexpected phone call. I did a year at a call center and although I did like the job I have absolutely no interest talking to anyone on the phone.

November 14, 2009 at 2:07 amI used to use IM a lot but sometime in the last 4-5 years I stopped. Right now I can’t really name very many people I know who still use them. I like the fact that Skype has an IM thing built in, but even there I don’t use it that much. Twitter is much better in my opinion for the very reasons you mentioned. I like the idea of a microcast there, Krishna. Good stuff, buddy!
