PC WEENIES turns 20 today!

October 21st, 2018 marks two decades my endeavor of making comics online. I started PC WEENIES while I was still working as a new engineer, fresh out of school. At the time, I was 27 years old, single, and had plenty of time on my hands. The idea for the characters and concept came about while in the midst of a shower. A few hours later, sitting outside with my sketchbook, I drew the very first versions of Bob, Pam and Milton.

The very first strip was drawn in my sketchbook. You can see it in the long out of print (but still available) PC WEENIES: REBOOTUS MAXIMUS book.

The name PC WEENIES and the initial impetus behind the strip was to poke fun of the overzealous Windows computer nerd. The near religious fervor of Macs versus PCs was particularly evident during the mid to late 90’s and my comic was a reaction to the relentless bullying Mac users faced during that time.

PC WEENIES started out as a strip, and then went on for a 9 year run as a single panel comic, before shifting back to strip oriented comics at the beginning of 2008.

Making a comic on a regular weekly schedule ingrained a habit that lasts to this day. Sticking with PC WEENIES through thick and thin taught me many of the digital tools that I continue to rely on as a professional designer and instructor.

I’m really proud of how the strip has grown and evolved. It’s not perfect, but it represents a body of work that I can look back on and say “I did that”. As many of you already know, the strip comes to a close on October 31st this year.

I am forever thankful to the numerous folks who’ve read and enjoyed my comics, supported my art on Patreon, or bought PC WEENIES books and swag. Speaking of the PC WEENIES book, it has traveled to all 7 continents, thanks to dedicated readers and fans. It’s an achievement I’m incredibly proud of!

I’ve made so many meaningful friends and contacts via PC WEENIES over the years. Through the comic’s online presence, I’ve been fortunate to gain several clients, including including Microsoft, Georgia Pacific, Other World Computing, White Hat Security and Typemock – among others.

So, what’s next for me?

I have some ideas on the table, including the development of a Youtube channel focusing on art instruction. I want to really push other areas of my art that I haven’t had time for, such as digital painting and animation. Of course, I’ll continue to make tech inspired comics for my clients, as long as they want me to.

And, yes, I want to write more articles and blog posts for the site. My Patreon site will still continue. I will use that platform to share my illustration work as well as make high resolution versions available to download. I also plan to add exclusive videos for Patreon supporters, in the area of art instruction and tutoring.

But most of all, I plan on taking some much needed rest from the grueling week-to-week cartooning schedule that has been the better part of my life. As always, thanks for reading!

Congrats K!. I haven’t always been active on the site, but I certainly have been a dedicated reader for a long time. Thanks for all the laughs, the reviews and everything along the way!

Congratulations on 20 years! Though I only started viewing them about five years ago, I’m really going to miss those bi-weekly comics in my Inbox…something I always anticipate to brighten up my work week.

I did not know the origin of the comic’s name. It’s funny because although I have been a Windows users (but not really one of those “Windows nerds” you allude to) for many years now, 20 years ago I was working in a job where I used a Power Mac. But the last Mac OS I have any real experience on is OS9!

Yours has been the one comic I’ve been reading for a long, long time now. I don’t remember when I first visited your site, but it’s quite long ago. You’ve maintained a high quality of humour over a long time, which is no mean achievement.

Excellent work and thanks for the entertainment. Though, I will miss the comics, I hope you continue posting your other work here, if possible.

thanks so much, Hari! Blog posts will certainly continue – and there may be a surprise or two on here in the comics space above, as inspiration warrants.

I think I started reading when you were in your single panel comic phase. Even the 2008 comic which is the first one on this site is not my oldest PC weenies comic.

So you went from complaining about Windows bullies to working on gigs for Microsoft? :)

Congrats on 20 years of the comic. Looking forward to the future projects.

Tell me what you think!
