Review: Brightech Lightview Pro LED Magnifying Clamp Lamp

Nowadays, I share my home office with my ten year old daughter, who likes to work on her crafts while I crank out designs at my desk. Since she’s spending more and more time in my office, I wanted to give her a space for her to do her work comfortably. We sorted the layout of both our desks rather easily, but it became obvious that she needed better lighting for her craft space.

Enter the Brightech Lightview Pro LED Magnifying Clamp Lamp, (or Clamp Lamp for short). In addition to being adjustable, by way of its swivel arm, this particular model features a built-in magnifier lens – making it ideal for doing intricate work.
Let’s see how it fares, shall we?

First thing’s first: The Brightech Clamp Lamp can be had for about $70. In addition to having an adjustable temperature range (3000K warm to 6000K daylight white), the Clamp Lamp sports a 5 inch diameter lens with 225% magnification. The lamp has a 9W LED lamp with an output of 650 lumens and comes with an adjustable neck and a 3 year warranty. It comes in black or white colors.

Everything you need is in the box, which comes well packed.

Inside is a pamphlet, the light itself, and the clamp, all ensconced within plastic to keep the parts from scratching during transit.

The metal clamp itself opens up 2.5″ and is designed for a wide variety of tables, from garage workbenches to cafeteria style tables (which I use).

Build quality is excellent for the Clamp Lamp. The lamp has a polished look, with a silver trim around it. On the top of the lamp itself is a lid that reveals the magnifying lens.

Also on the top are the lamp’s controls. The left two controls are used for adjusting the lighting temperature, while the right two controls adjust the brightness. The controls are responsive to touch. The lamp does not produce heat like other bulbs (incandescent or halogen), so no need to worry about burning yourself when working with it.

Installation is a very simple affair. First, install the clamp to your desk. Next, take the adjustable arm and mount it to the top of the clamp. Plug it in and you’re good to go.

There are two reasons why I really like the Clamp Lamp. First, it holds its position really well. Very little force is required to move the arm where it needs to go. Once moved, the arm stays in position. No drooping or sagging whatsoever.

The second reason I like the Clamp Lamp is its 2.25X magnifier lens. The 4.75″ lens is crystal clear and free from distortion for objects that are between 4″ to 6″ below the lens. This makes it ideal for working with intricate items, like the Gundam robot my daughter and I have started building. No more squinting for me. The head of the lamp can swivel and rotate as needed, making it ideal for reading, sewing, sketching, or anything else you normally do at your desk. I suppose this lamp could also be ideal for professional use in beauty salons or jewelry stores. Note: This lamp is not meant for hanging upside down. Another niggle is that the lamp does not remember your brightness or color settings, but in our use case this lamp is on most of the time.

All in all, the Brightech LED Clamp Lamp is a fine piece of kit. It features excellent craftsmanship, a good array of features, and it’s not too heavy on the wallet. Five Bobs.
