Review: Ditto Keyboard for iOS
Typing on my iPhone leaves a lot to be desired. I have big fingers, and I’m error-prone when texting and writing notes using the small keys. The problems are further compounded when I’m typing often used phrases (known as text snippets), such as my address, phone number, etc.
There is no shortage of text expanding snippet apps available for iOS, but I feel like I’ve found a good one that meets my needs. That application is Ditto Keyboard, by developer Alex Kern, which is free on the iOS App Store. To use Ditto, you’ll need an iOS device running iOS 8 or greater.
What does Ditto do?
Simply put, it gives users the ability to quickly create and apply commonly used text within any of your iOS apps. Ditto goes one step further by allowing users to set up specific categories for your text snippets. For example, there’s a category called Business, which has a few built in phrases you can use when following up with a client. Within each category, users can use the provided boilerplate text or make your own from scratch. If you use Instagram, you can save your commonly used hashtags as a snippet to add to your photos. Commonly used emojis can also be added into your snippets, if you prefer.
Ditto lets you create and delete categories for your snippets. Deleting a category will remove all enclosed snippets.
Ditto works as a keyboard and is available within all of your iOS apps. To activate it, you’ll have to add Ditto in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. All keyboard snippets are saved on your device. Below are some screenshots of Ditto.
Ditto does not have a sync method to let you share your snippet library across all your iOS devices. This is a bit of a drag, but not a total deal-breaker for me since I spend 90% of my time on one device: my iPhone. Ditto’s user interface keeps your commonly used snippets available for easy access. I tested this across multiple apps, including Messages, Instagram, Pages, and Airmail and everything worked as advertised. It’s free, so you can test Ditto out for yourself to see if it’s right for you.
