Review: MOS Magnetic Organizing System for Cable Management

I have a few pet peeves with technology, and cables that precariously dangle off my desk is one of them. In an effort to cross that peeve off my list, I came across an intriguing product called MOS, short for Magnetic Organization System, which retails for about $23. This device, shortened to MOS for the duration of this review, bills itself as a magnetic cable organizer, capable of keeping your cables within easy reach (and more importantly, off the floor). Does it work? Read on for my review…

Let’s start with the packaging. The box that houses the MOS is roughly 4″ x 4″ x 1″ in size.

Pull the small orange ribbon on the side of the box, and the triangular shaped MOS base is revealed. This product is advertised as being utilized on a desk or as a wall mount unit. For this review, I’m testing the MOS as a desk unit. The MOS comes in three colors: black poly carbonate, white polycarbonate, and anodized aluminum, features a scratch resistant finish, and weighs approximately 1 ounce.

Also in the box is a very brief instruction pamphlet and three snap-on cable magnets, colored in blue.

The magnets are optional, of course, as the MOS works just fine with most ordinary wires (USB, Firewire, Lightning). And yes, I know I have a frayed Lightning port cable that needs to be replaced.

Adding the magnets to each cable is simple, and gives an even better connection to the MOS base.

The bottom of the MOS features an AirStick base, which lets the base stay put. If the MOS base needs to be removed or repositioned, the AirStick underside will not leave a residue on your desk. My testing confirmed it. Furthermore, the suction is pretty strong when the unit is on the desk.

The MOS is a product designed in Utah and made in China. Not only does the MOS keep my cables in place, it feels durable and looks good on my desk. Best of all, it doesn’t leave a residue if it needs to be repositioned. While I am more than pleased with my MOS unit, both in terms of size and functionality, I think a larger magnetic base unit would be great for folks who have more than three cables to manage. At $23 it’s a bit pricey, but if you shop around you can buy one for about $14 or so online.

The MOS Magnetic Organizing System earns 5 out of 5 Bob Weiners.
