Building the RoBeast: The Parts are In

Building a PC is something I’ve wanted to do for some time now. Being a Mac / Apple guy for the better part of the past 30 years, I was curious to know how much things have improved on the PC side in the intervening 22 years since I last owned one (a 486DX/33 with 4MB of RAM!).

This is the first blog post in a (hopefully) long series of getting reacquainted with the PC platform again: both hardware and software. Below is the breakdown for the parts and costs, all purchased from Amazon. The components were purchased piece meal, which accounted for the delay in writing this post.

Thermaltake CoreV21 microATX Cube: $74.89
Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz processor: $200.77
Gigabyte LGA 1150 Z97 HD Audio Support Micro ATX motherboard: $118.64

Parts that were generously donated by readers:

Corsair 600W power supply (Amazon price: $56.99)
Crucial Ballistix Tactical Low Profile RAM (2 x 8GB) (Amazon price: $109.99)

Parts that I already had:

Apple keyboard (extended) USB
Targus mouse
Hanns-G 19″ display
OWC 120GB Solid State Drive

Parts that I bought, but did not use:

CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler ($32.99)

Not including the CoolerMaster, the total spent out of pocket was $394.30. The build (not including keyboard / mouse / SSD / monitor) works out to $561.28. For this particular build I opted to forgo purchasing a dedicated video card – simply because the Gigabyte motherboard provides video support. (A 4GB video card would add an additional $100 to the price.)

All the parts are in for my forthcoming Hackintosh build. The power supply is in. Next up… the rest of the assembly!
