PC Weenies: The Sweet Sixteen

Bob_Frightened

This week kicks off the 16th year anniversary of PC Weenies. Hard to believe, but yes – it’s true. What started out as a lark has turned into a full fledged “second job” for me. Making a comic online not only taught me the rigors of making comics, it taught me about the work ethic and business aspects that go along with it.

In the beginning, I knew practically nothing about the medium of publishing online. But I had the interest. And over time, I learned.

At the time, “webcomic” hadn’t been coined, and there were only but a handful of players making comics for an audience. Some of the big ones are still around (Penny Arcade, PvP, GPF), but many have fallen by the wayside over the years.

Like the little engine that could, PC Weenies has stuck around.

Below is the very first PC Weenies comic that I unleashed upon the web.

Initially, I envisioned the comic as a multi-panel comic strip, but after about 20 or so published comics, I settled on the single panel format. With few exceptions over the years, PCW stayed true to that format.

Then, in late 2007 / early 2008, I switched formats back to multi-panel. And that’s pretty much been the format ever since. While the comic series was heavily focused on tech / geek culture, I felt a yearning to move beyond that to focus on short, serialized stories. It’s a format that I’ve grown to really enjoy. Part of the beauty of making an online comic is that I can take the characters wherever I want to. It keeps the comic fresh and enjoyable for me.

Whether you are new to the comic (welcome!), or you’ve been reading for years, I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your support. It means the world to me, and I hope you’ll continue to read and share the adventures of Bob and company with your friends and coworkers.

Stay ‘tooned!
