This is funny. I can relate to this even though I can stay offline for a long period, I’m always wondering how many e-mails I’ll be getting in my inbox. ;)
I feel sorry for the previous poster, eddie. I’m addicted to both City of Heroin and World of Warcrack so currently I’m not paying for either so that I can actually get my Masters classes done. But the withdrawal symptoms are bad. (When you start dreaming of playing MMORPGs, you have issues…)
As for the ‘net in general, I can actually go a day or so without it, but then I’m chomping on the bit to get back. Now if I’ve got fun things to do in the Real World, I don’t miss it much at all (vacationing in Italy, my sister’s weekend wedding in the wilds of Minnesota, etc).
But I am well & truly a geek, which I realized last night when we had a 4-hour power outage due to ice. I started by doing some college stuff on my laptop until I was down to 10% battery power. Then I listened to my iPod and played my Nintendo Gameboy. Called my folks on my cell phone, too (since I don’t have a landline phone that can work without power).
This all pales in comparison to my friend who, during Detroit’s power outages a few years ago, still got online by going outside and hooking her laptop’s modem to her landline. Heh heh.
Most years I go 10 days….My other hobby is re-creating the Middle Ages and we have a week long event in March (no funds this year)…as I am usually on the Staff, I get there the Friday before and of course do not leave until the next Sunday. Being fully involved it is easy to forget about my electronic habit for that little time.
Now the time it takes me to download my email once I get home….ARGH!!! (come in, turn on the computer, start downloading email….fix drink, fix sandwich, start eating…and watch the rest of the email download)
Hmm.. I can go for about two or three days with out access to the net. In fact I make it a point every few months or so to head to a place that doesn’t have net access just so I can get away for a day or so.
after missing 2 days at work due to being ridiculously ill I had ~600 emails waiting for me (20% of which were “urgent”). I love vacationing and unplugging, but I HATE getting behind on emails… so yeah I could knock the internet if I had a different job. Hmmmm… what job doesnt required the Internet?
