Reviving a Pair of Sony MDR-7506 Headphones

My Sony MDR-7506 headphones have some history. They were purchased new for a sound design class that I took (over 20 years ago) and have been in regular use from that point forward.

Suffice to say, these venerable headphones have plenty of “ear mileage”. As with most products we own and use, there will always be wear and tear. Over the past few years, I would notice black flecks and specks on my face and clothes, a clear sign that the earpads were deteriorating.

Thankfully, options abound. I picked up a replacement pair from Wicked Cushions for about $20. Below you can see the original earpads versus the new Wicked Cushions replacement. Talk about a night and day difference, right?

Installation was trivial. I simply removed the old ear pads and gently worked the new earpads over each housing. The new earpads make my MDR-7506’s look brand new again!

The Wicked Cushions earpads are comfortable to wear and – best of all, they sound great! And if they didn’t, for any reason, the company has a 1 year warranty. If you don’t like the product within a year of use, you can get your money back!

Of course, now that I’m rocking a “new” pair of headphones, I wanted a solution to keep them within easy reach and off my desk. That’s where AppHome’s headphone stand hanger comes in.

This $14 product is essentially a C-clamp with a hook, but it feels sturdy and looks great on my new desk. The hinge is sturdy and there’s a small notch where you can place your headset’s cable inside so that it doesn’t drag on the floor. You can hang the unit vertically or horizontally. (Inside the box are supplied screws and a small Allen wrench to make the necessary mods.) The clamp can work on desks from 5mm to 45mm in thickness and comes with a 1 year warranty and a 60 day money back guarantee.

All in all, I’m very pleased with both purchases.
