One of the best things about the Mac has always been a robust selection of polished third party utilities. Here are a few of my must-have favorites that I can’t live without.
HazeOver ($9.99 via the Mac App Store): This app is relatively new to my Mac utility arsenal, but it has quickly become one of my absolute favorites. HazeOver automatically highlights the front window by fading out all the background windows. With HazeOver, I can focus on my current task without distraction. Plus, it works great on multi-display setups!
Default Folder X ($34.99 via St. Clair Software): I’ve raved about Default Folder in the past and, years later, I still rave about it. Outside of assigning favorite folders for specific apps (which it does well, I might add), I find its menubar utility indispensable for providing quick access to any file or folder I might need.
Tooth Fairy ($2.99 via the Mac App Store): If you have a pair of Bluetooth headphones or speakers, you’ll appreciate the ability to quickly connect them to your Mac with a single click or keypress. I use Tooth Fairy when I want to listen to audio on my Mac mini, via my AirPods. With Tooth Fairy, I no longer have to guess whether my AirPods or external speakers will receive audio. Best of all, thanks to Tooth Fairy’s menu bar app, you can quickly see how much charge your AirPods have on them.
Magnet ($1.99 via the Mac App Store): There’s a reason why this app is currently #1 in the Productivity section of the Mac App Store. It’s dang useful! Magnet lets you quickly organize your windows. Specifically, Magnet can quickly stack two windows side by side or one above the other, making it really easy when you are copying, comparing or multitasking between multiple windows. Magnet includes several built-in arrangements, with accompanying keyboard shortcuts. This app has replaced Divvy, which hasn’t been updated in quite some time.
