Lost in Space

Aarti and I watched the entire first season of the new Netflix TV series “Lost in Space”. Our verdict: we enjoyed it… a lot!

I was too young to watch the original series but managed to watch more than a handful of episodes of the original in re-runs. My memories are vague, but the recollection I have of the original is that it was somewhat cheesy. The new “Lost in Space” features an excellent cast, solid character development and stunning special effects. The first season ends on a cliff-hanger that has my wife and I anxious to see what happens next.

Parker Posey steals the show as the crafty Dr. Smith. There are nods to the old series everywhere, but I especially enjoyed the fact that Bill Mumy (the original Will Robinson) makes a cameo in the first episode. The core element of “Swiss Family Robinson in space” doesn’t change in the Netflix series, but the characters are all fleshed out, with enough backstory to understand why they each act the way that they do. You don’t need to have watched the original series to understand what’s happening here. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers engaged. We binged the series over the course of a week.

The new “Lost in Space” is family friendly, but there are some potentially scary scenes involving the robot that you may want to shield from the little ones. All in all, we give it a hearty thumbs up.

I had just finished ‘binging’ the first season also. I do not remember too much from the ‘reruns’ of the original, but I do remember it being a bit ‘not taking itself too seriously’ type of show. but, then again, we have to take in consideration the era it was made in, just beginnings of actual space exploration. I am still ‘on the fence’ about this interpretation of the Dr. Smith character, but I like how the rest of the family is put together with more realistic issues and angst.

Tell me what you think!
