I’m a recent Windows 10 user and I have a problem. Simply put, I want to easily discover and buy best-in-class applications for Windows 10. But it’s a big challenge.
For starters, I am not aware of an up-to-date curated list of best-in-class apps available for Windows 10. Sure, there are many sites which feature the best free apps available for the platform – but I’m unusual in that I want to learn and discover the best apps out there, whether I have to pay for them or not.
There are many Mac sites that regularly curate and feature the best Mac software available. I’m struggling to find something equivalent on the Windows side. (Perhaps some kind soul will direct me to such a place if it exists.)
I know what you’re probably thinking: What about the Windows App Store?
To be perfectly honest, I’m still not altogether impressed with the selection and quality of listed software there. It’s disappointing that even after four months of waiting, I still see the same boring apps listed on the store. This is a problem.
Beyond more apps, the Windows Store desperately needs human curation within their store. Microsoft must find the best-in-breed software makers for the Windows platform and recognize their efforts. Additionally, there needs to be a clear bar set for what constitutes an exemplary third party Windows application. Such applications should get front and center “Featured Best-in-Class” distinctions within the Windows App Store. In my research, I haven’t come across such a list.
My Windows owning friends tell me that there is great software out there for Windows 10 if I look hard enough. But should I have to?
Microsoft, you’ve made something good with Windows 10. Add to the momentum by introducing your users to the best software we can find on your platform. I want to believe.
