When I made the switch to a new 13″ Retina Macbook Pro last month, some old friends came along. I speak of my traveling gear, of course.
There’s my Spire Explore backpack, which turned 16 years old this year. This laptop bag was purchased new and has carried every single laptop I have ever owned.
And the newest piece of my road warrior arsenal, the SpireUSA Messenger sleeve, is now pushing 7 years old.
The Messenger sleeve fits snuggly inside my Spire backpack, giving my laptop padding and protection on all four sides.
The Messenger sleeve, like its backpack counterpart, is durable and comfortable to tote around. You can strap it across your chest or use the built-in handles to carry your laptop comfortably.
Though the Messenger sleeve was designed to accommodate a 15″ model laptop, my 13″ rMBP fits in just fine. The exterior is comprised of a tough Ballistic nylon exterior, and it contains a large rear pocket for holding thin documents or folders. A large velcro flap secures the laptop in place when on the go.
When the Macbook Pro is stationed at my desk, I place it on a RoadTools Coolpad, which was purchased in 2001. Four rubberized feet keep the Macbook Pro elevated, and the built-in swivel lets you adjust the direction of the laptop to taste.
Spire has rebranded the Messenger as the Boot, available in various sizes. While the Explore backpack is no longer offered, Spire’s Zoom model appears to be the nearest comparable model.
What’s remarkable about my “road warrior” gear is that it still holds up really, really well. I paid $125 for the SpireUSA Explore backpack, $30 for the Messenger Sleeve, and $20 for the CoolPad. That investment is still serving me many years later.
You really do get what you pay for.
