The television series “All in the Family” is one of my earliest television memories. Back then, much of the humor and social commentary went over my head, but the one character I always remembered the most was Edith Bunker, played by actress Jean Stapleton. Her nasally voice “ARRCHIEEE!” still rings in my head…
Edith played the role of the dutiful wife. She was always bullied by her husband Archie, yet she somehow put up with him and still managed to smile. “All in the Family” still holds up four decades later (a rarity in TV sitcoms), and the theme song for the show brings back some fond childhood memories.
By today’s standards, “All in the Family” would never air on television – because it’s not “politically correct”. Politically correct or not, it’s still very much worth watching. And if you’ve never seen it before, hopefully this post will help you seek out a few episodes…
Jean Stapleton died today. She lived to the ripe old age of 90, and she will be missed. I hope you enjoy my little artistic tribute to Archie and Edith Bunker.
