The focus for last week’s Mentor Experiment assignment was silhouette values. Up above are Kyndra’s submissions. Kyndra did a really nice job conveying the age and time period in her silhouette studies.
The one suggestion I’d make is to have a little bit of the rim of her glass peek through her silhouette in the bottom pose (where she’s twirling the pocket watch). The character has a nice line of action on the top left pose, and it can be pushed further for the bottom pose. The running silhouette could be clearer with the hand in the back moved out to our left so it’s more visible.
Overall, really strong work, Kyndra!

March 8, 2012 at 11:19 amOdd, why does her character have two knees on her right leg in the running pose? Going by where the knee is on the left leg, there is no way you should be able to see her right knee. If you straighten the right leg you can see it is much longer then the left.
This is why you need to draw a basic skeleton (i.e. stick and ball method) whenever you’re designing a pose and why you never dress a character until the pose looks right.

March 8, 2012 at 11:50 amI didn’t interpret that as two knees, Dungeonwarden – it looked more like her bloomers (under the dress). Of course, if there is that ambiguity, it needs to be cleared up.

March 9, 2012 at 3:06 amWell, unless the right boot is flying off the foot, that leg is much too long. If you draw the bones, you can see there are two bends (hip to mid-dress about there the left knee would be), then to the “bloomers”, and finally to the boot.
I agree that these are very well done silhouettes but that leg just doesn’t look right to me.

March 10, 2012 at 3:23 amYou’re both right actually. The leg is too long, and it’s her knickers, not a second knee. I really struggled with that one!

March 8, 2012 at 4:01 pmAre you kidding? Wow, again Kendra’s submission looks like it could be in a text book. Way to set the bar high.

March 10, 2012 at 3:46 amBarry, you’ve shown an amazing amount of improvement already with this project. You shouldn’t sell your progress short at all! As I believe I’ve said before, I personally admire your dedication to your comic and your want to improve. I don’t have any online projects myself (like you do!) because I don’t have that perseverance yet. Keep working hard, Barry- and remember we both want to improve.
