Inspired by the fine folks at Apartment Therapy I spent the weekend cleaning up my studio area – specifically my closet area and filing cabinet. So without further ado, my studio space:
My main workstation is a Mac Pro (2008 model) with 10GB of RAM, 40GB OWC Solid State Drive (OS and apps) and 3 regular hard drives of varying sizes for data and back-up. You can see an Apple IIGS holding up a Hanns-G 19″ monitor. The other display is a Samsung 30″.
To my desktop rig’s left is my laptop station – where my erstwhile Macbook Pro (early 2008 model) sits. The Macbook Pro has a stock 5400 RPM drive and 4GB of RAM. It’s my hope to one day bump the drive to a solid state drive. And there’s another Apple IIGS, with Owly perched on top of it.
The closet, after the purge. I moved most of my toys to the top shelf.
My art desk, where I work on commissions.
Another view of the art desk, in context to where my computers are situated.
The hutch stores my art and mailing supplies, along with a few toys. The hutch is over 20 years old.
Lastly, my filing cabinet – with a streamlined look up top, and totally reorganized from top to bottom on the inside. Before the purge, my filing cabinet was a dumping ground for miscellaneous odds and ends. I don’t have Before pictures, but suffice to say, it was a total unsorted mess. Truthfully, I’d avoided cleaning it up because I felt that the process would be overwhelming. However, once I cleaned the first cabinet, and saw how it could look, I barreled through the others with relative ease. (Starting is always the hardest part for me.) Now I’m pleased to say that each drawer in the filing cabinet has a specific purpose, as it should.
Art supplies:
Cables:
Magazines and miscellaneous stuff I want to keep:
Through the sorting process, I set aside two piles – the “Keep” pile (for items I would definitely use) and the “Purge” pile, for items I hadn’t used in 5 years and would probably not miss. I ended up filling an entire garbage bag worth of such items. The end result is that my office feels less cluttered and more organized. I now have a clear idea of exactly what’s in the filing cabinet and where to find it.
Mission accomplished!

I like those old Apple IIGS systems. I never had one myself, but have long wanted one. My first computer was a //e, new enough to come with ProDOS, but old enough not to have the open/closed apple characters… But I sold it after a few years to get my first PC compatible…
