I know a lot of people who were nerds in school, and they all tell the same story: there is a strong correlation between being smart and being a nerd, and an even stronger inverse correlation between being a nerd and being popular. Being smart seems to make you unpopular.
I wish I had access to this fantastic Paul Graham article when I was in high school. A Must Read.
To high school students reading this, I promise you It Gets Better in college. Trust me.

August 15, 2011 at 10:36 pmIt gets even better after college. That’s when you find out the folks that gave you the most grief for being a nerd are the ones still in your hometown working at Home Depot while you are working on the Space Station. ;-) That’s when you find out that the girls that wouldn’t give you the time of day tell you, “I wish I would have found someone like you earlier,” or “I wish I would have dated a nerd in high school and college.”
I dont’ say the above bitterly because we all have our own paths to forge,. I am thankful for the challenging road to which I was called. But the above is what I am hearing and seeing on Social Networking clients constantly. It’s an interesting circle of life.

August 18, 2011 at 9:56 amI’m Dutch and didn’t have this experience at all. Quite the contrary, smart students were popular students, because they got high grades, which would help them get great education and good jobs later in life. The teachers made sure to tell us that, even in elementary school.
