Character Design Tip: The Power of the Symmetry Y Tool

Autodesk Sketchbook Pro is a fantastic digital sketching tool. I use it nearly every day for drawing “roughs”. The drawing tools are responsive and fast, and the interface is minimal and gets out of your way.

Today’s Sketchbook Pro tip involves using the Symmetry Y tool. It’s a fantastic option to try out when you’re brainstorming character design. The Symmetry Y tool is located under the Image menu.

Using the Symmetry Y tool in Sketchbook Pro

Simply draw one side (either left or right), and your lines are mirrored on the opposite side. I’ve used this tool for brainstorming character designs and have found it to be indispensable. You can use it for heads, like the example below:
