Site Outages and a New Hosting Review Resource

I really don’t have an explanation as to why my site keeps going down so frequently (it usually happens twice a month). The forced downtime almost every week has been incredibly frustrating, and I apologize in advance for any inconvenience. (Perhaps my host is connected to the Footle servers…)

Speaking of hosts, I was recently tipped off to a pretty comprehensive web host review site: Web Hosting Reviews. There are thousands of customer reviews to be found here, which makes it a perfect starting point if you’re in the market for a new host. Sites are rated with five criterion:

  • uptime and reliability
  • server and connection speed
  • technical support and knowledge
  • customer service and billing
  • price value for money

I found the site to be pretty useful, and I’m definitely keeping my options open for the near future. My site’s hosted by Dreamhost, for what it’s worth.

I think web hosting has become such a commodity, that it’s nearly impossible to deliver good service for the low prices customers demand. I can remember the time you had to send in a copy of a document from the chamber of commerce, proving you are a business, and pay at least 80 dollars per month. They had business hours phone support (Mo-Fr 9 am – 5 pm) with local (not outsourced) tech support.

It seems you get what you pay for.

Hate to say it, but that review site ain’t worth a damn.

I’ve been hosting with Nexcess for years, and they can’t even be found in there.

    Nexcess hosts us.php.net

Hosting is a commodity – I remember the days of paying $35/ month for hosting once upon a time. With such thin margins, it’s difficult to choose a good provider. Chris, are you happy with Nexcess?

Tell me what you think!
