pcweenies.com gets a new coat of paint!

This weekend, I spent a few hours handling site maintenance chores. I’ve upgraded all my sites to the latest version of WordPress (3.0, at this writing), and encountered nary a hiccup in the process (though I did have to disable WP-Supercache before doing the upgrade). While I was on a web fixing kick, I also made some necessary updates to the PC Weenies site. The new coat of paint may be the most noticeable change, but I’ve also done a few things to streamline your navigation throughout the site.

site update July 2010

The biggest change you’ll notice is the small navigation bar below each comic. These items were previously on the sidebar, and – to be honest, I think most people never paid attention to them. The revised placement should help.

One thing I wish I could add back to the site is the ability to e-mail your favorite ‘toon to a friend, and have the button directly under each comic. The technical voodoo required to re-enable such a feature (long a staple on the old PC Weenies site) is a bit beyond my capacity. Maybe there’s a clever WordPress plugin that will let me do that?

Let me know what you think of the new look!

I agree with you, these buttons have to be easier for the reader to see. But if I can make one suggestion: the first thing I would put below the strips are the navigation buttons for the Previous/Next/etc. For a new reader (or reader catching up), the less you have scroll down to click on next, the better it is for you.

RE: the 3.0 WP upgrade, may I ask you what kind of hiccups you encountered? Every time I think of upgrading to 3.0 myself, I never do it because I fear I’d have to make coding modifications to my CP them layout. While I don’t mind doing it, I rarely have the time to do it :P

Thanks for the feedback, Antoine! I’ve tried moving the buttons below the nav, but for some reason, it breaks the site. I’m not quite sure why. I’ve taken out my affiliate ads to move the buttons up more. Hopefully that works better…

Yeah, for some reasons, as soon as we want to move the Graphical Navigation Widget ( I assume you are using it :P), CSS modifications are required

I didn’t have any hiccups. I took Phil Hofer’s advice and disabled WP Supercache before running the auto-upgrade. Maybe an active Supercache screws things up?

Tell me what you think!
