Last week, my parents purchased a brand new iMac. In the process of my negotiation with the sales person at the Apple Store, I was able to get them to throw in an extra wired Apple keyboard at no charge. I’d been wanting to get my hands on one for a few months now, and I couldn’t turn my back on a ripe opportunity.
Anyway, now that we’ve settled in at home in Tampa after our brief visit to Knoxville, I did what every geek normally does once they receive a new shiny geek object de lust. I took photos of the unboxing.
Inside the svelte box was the keyboard, an extra cable extender, and some sparse documentation (this is the part we tried-and-true geeks ignore). I connected the keyboard with my Macbook Pro, but the problem I encountered using this combo is that I would find myself reaching for an imaginary mouse before resigning myself to traveling my hands toward the MBP’s keypad.
I’ve swapped out the keyboard with my regular (long) Apple Aluminum keyboard on the Mac Pro instead. We’ll see how it goes. So far, I really like the small footprint. It does take a bit of getting used to from using the large Apple keyboard, but I think after a few days my fingers will properly map over.
The one thing that I still have to get used to is the smaller arrow keys on the new keyboard. I use my arrow keys regularly, and the smaller size makes it easier for me to miss them when registering a keystroke.
The only two caveats I foresee with this keyboard are 1) any potential challenges I might run into on the Windows 7 side (via Boot Camp) and 2) the smaller command keys. It’s a solidly built keyboard. Let’s see how I feel about it a few days from now.

June 30, 2010 at 11:58 pmI was able to do the same thing when I got my Mac back in January. For what I do with my music I NEED the number pad on the keyboard so I was able to get the wired keyboard with number pad for free and they kept the wireless one in with the iMac in the box.
