Delving into the past…

I’ve been on the elusive hunt to find some digital photos I had taken back in 2001 – from trips to Sydney, Australia and Winnipeg, Canada (my birthplace). The fact that I’ve been searching for these photos for over two years, with nothing to show for it, has been incredibly frustrating. Especially given that I have always been somewhat of a pack-rat when it comes to photos and personal effects (digital and otherwise).

These long-missing photos were taken with a trusty 2 Megapixel Kodak DC3400 – nothing fancy, but a good camera in its day. Yesterday, the hunt began again – in earnest. I scoured all my back-up CDs, going back to 2001, once again – hoping beyond hope I’d accidentally stumble upon them.

I searched the various CD spindles I had amassed during those years (in that era I didn’t have a fancy-shmancy DVD burner). I also searched my entire collection of audio CDs thinking that I may have mistakenly misfiled the disc containing both photo sets – but, alas, no such luck. Even more baffling, I have multiple copies of just about every photo I’ve ever taken since 2001 on several CDs – all except those two trips.

Into the wee hours of last night, just when I was about to give up – I managed to find an old version of my long-dead personal web site, tucked away on a lone CD. It was on this one solitary disc that I found salvageable web-prepped versions of these photos. They’re too small to print from, but, hey, at least it’s something…

I should add that while searching through my various back-up CDs, I felt like I was traveling back in time through my digital life. I found back-ups of all my old OS 9 apps and data files, my original Mac OS X 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 discs – and a few surprise favorite MP3’s that had been tucked away and conveniently forgotten.

Which reminds me….

I don’t have a back-up system in place on my Mac Pro and I probably need to get one together asap. I’ve got SuperDuper – all I need now is a new drive…
