True Stories from Tech Support

People seem to misunderstand the fact that performing competent computer services is a skill worth paying for. You pay the plumber. You pay the mechanic. So why should paying for IT support be any different? (Or for that matter, paying artists?)

But I digress…

I am almost hesitant to mention my computer skills in regular company, because almost immediately, I know that someone will try to take advantage of the fact that “I like computers”. Yes, I like computers, but that doesn’t mean I like your computer.

Today’s comic was based on a true story. Not mine, but someone else’s. Maybe it’s you?

P.S. Inks and colors will happen this afternoon. Be patient with me. (In the meantime, why not share the comic with your non-paying clients and acquaintances? Maybe they’ll finally get the message.)

I’ve learnt to shut up no matter how terribly wrong the people around me are about some computer related topic. I spent a whole day building a friend’s new computer once. When I finished, my friend told me I deserved to be paid, but his mother instantly shouted “There’s no need! He enjoys doing it!”.

Oh yeah… And of course, “oh you like computers… So you’ll enjoy typing in my address book for me.”

Hi! Sent from Crashplan tweet. All too often backups seem ‘easy’ too! I spent time and money on perfecting backups. When someone does loose a hard drive and gets their computer back with their files intact they don’t even realise the work/money involved!

Tell me what you think!
