It’s interesting that this is often the case. Yet there are many programmers who are both perfectly good at their craft and not obsessed with it. These are the programmers who work 8-12, 1-5, come home to watch TV and retire early. Regular lives, regular jobs. These people didn’t get where they are today by not being any good, but their type are foreign to the Silicon Valley types of today.
Just my two cents. I’m an obsessive myself.

I think it has to do something with having a knack for it. Like some folks are more mechanically aligned. In a similar way, there are people that are really good at logic and seeing things on a higher level. Others have to work at it. Or, in Bob’s case, he’s a big nerd who lives and breathes it because he loves it. :D
