As an IT individual, one is bound to come across contraband material on work computers. How would you handle the above situation, if you came across a co-worker engaged in such activities? Sound off in the comments below!
As a systems administrator, I’ve had to waste way too much time trying to stop folks from accessing those sort of sites from work. One individual kept infecting the network with viruses and other crap we didn’t need and blocking him in one place just led to him finding a way around the rules in another place. (It’s a lot easier to experiment when you work 3rd shift and have the room to yourself apparently.)
So…yeah, I know exactly what that’s like..
I once had to call police over what was found on a laptop during a transfer to a new one. I happened to lookup at the screen during a file copy operation and saw a file named “preteen-fu**ing.jpg” fly by. A very tense day.
Just last week, I recovered a bunch of files off of a dead laptop driver for a coworkers daughter (work approved by the IT Director) and while files were copying from the old laptop drive to their new portable drive, there was some interesting file names going by. And in comparing directories later, I noticed that the husband’s account was the one that held all those interesting files. Certainly wasn’t going to look at them at work, but you tell how smutty they were by the filenames. I wonder if they wife is going to see those or if she’s just going to worry about making sure she has her wedding pictures back.
Oh, and there was a couple of viruses on the old laptop drive…
yeah that situation is definately up my alley, this one laptop user was complaining her laptop was too small(after we swapped it from the bigger one when she said it was too big) so when i was moving her files over to the laptop, i told her i moved her “other” files, she was like what? your porn, “oh i dont know how that got on there, my system must have a virus or something” me—>righttttttt
I’ve gotten over 1/2 of my collection from co-workers. lol. Just kidding. I’ve definitely seen a lot of different types of media. I can’t believe what people are willing to put on work property. I’ve even caught a couple of extremely personal photos and videos.
One situation comes to mind though: A laptop came back from this lady saying her husband was on it and now it had a virus. After debugging and trying to backup all the files I noticed a few things. After going into them, I saw pictures of the co-worker with her husband. None of my business, but I told her I recovered all of her files. I don’t think she knew honestly.
That’s why I hide all mine in a folder labeled ‘Garfield’, because I know nobody would want to look in there.
Err, I mean, I would be shocked and appalled if I were to discover someone doing such a thing.
