Grandma Maude Weiner has been a huge blast to draw for me – and I am pleased to have her in the strip (hope you are too!). This isn’t a spoiler – just the product of a productive late night sketch session. But this blog post is really an excuse for me to let you know that I’ve made a few welcome changes to the layout of the buttons under each strip on the website. After many months of trying to fix the layout issue, I’m pleased with how it came out. The new layout change should make it much easier for folks with smaller screens (like iPads, etc.) to quickly breeze forward and backward through the comics from the main page.

As always, I welcome your feedback on both the strip and the site!

Megacon 2012 kicks off tomorrow, I’ll be there on Saturday and Sunday with PC Weenies books, UNcubed/PC Weenies Sampler comics and for the first time ever – exclusive limited edition PC Weenies prints!

I’ll be in Black-4 (Artist Alley) sharing a table with Stephen Wittmaak. Below are just a few photos of some of the wares I’m bringing to sell at the show.

First up, 8.5 x 11 glossy prints – I’ll have a total of 8 different prints in very limited numbers. (No more than 20 prints of each). Prints will be $7 each, or 4 for $20.

Next are watercolor prints – I’ve only made 20 of each, featuring the designs below. The watercolor prints measure 9 x 12 inches and are printed on a beautifully textured watercolor paper. These will be available for $25 each.

Here’s a close-up of the Trekkie one framed.

And my display units (both framed).

All prints will be signed, and the watercolor prints will be numbered and signed. PC Weenies Book 1 will be available for $15 and the remaining Sampler #2′s will be blown out at $3 a pop. High-fives and fist bumps will be given away for free!

Maybe I’ll see you at the show?

Megacon, the largest comics convention in Orlando, Florida, is but a mere two weeks from today, and I’m scrambling to make some new prints. I’ve sketched a few ideas out on my Tumblr page – maybe you can help me decide which ones are worth inking and coloring. There’s a bit of something for everyone, including Dr. Who, Mario, Superman, Batgirl, and more. Take a look and share your feedback. Thanks!

As I mentioned on the blog earlier, I have tweaked my workflow in a way that will make drawing my comics much more fun for me. Normally, I would plot and draw the characters, etc. within the 4 panel strip. Drawing within a box felt very restrictive, so I decided to try something different.

So, after plotting the script in a Photoshop 4-panel template, I opened up a new Painter canvas and penciled each of the four panels on a separate layer. Drawing without worrying about the panel border felt liberating. It allowed me to focus more on the character’s body language without having to worry about whether or not it would “fit” in the panel. For those who are curious, my Painter canvas size is 3000 x 3000 px (600 dpi) in size. The strip template is 7.5″ x 2.5″ at (600 dpi) in size.

After penciling, I bring the roughs into Photoshop and adjust the placement of the characters into the panels. Once everything looks okay, I go back to the original Painter canvas, save it out, and then proceed to ink the drawings in Sketchbook Pro.

Once the drawings have been inked, I’m ready to populate them into the panel template. I have to scale the characters down to fit the panels, which isn’t really a big deal. I really like the fact I can add details and have them preserved when I shrink the drawing to fit in the panel.

How much do I like this new approach?

Enough to permanently add it to my cartooning workflow. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
