First Impressions of the iPhone 6 Plus

After over a month of waiting, Aarti’s iPhone 6 Plus arrived this evening. This isn’t so much of a review as it is my initial hands-on impressions with the device. Prior to receiving the device this afternoon, I’d never seen nor held one in my hand. Truth be told, it’s a beautiful device – and very light to hold.

We purchased the 6plus (16GB) over the regular 6 because my wife wanted the larger screen. Prior to her new phone, she was plodding along with an iPhone4 (8GB model). She carries her phone in her purse, so the extra size of the device itself wasn’t much of a concern. We opted for the 16GB model based on my wife’s usage needs. She’s not an avid app downloader. She uses her phone for calls, GPS, checking email, Yelp, Netflix, and Facebook.

Let’s start with my first quibble: the packaging.

It is very easy to potentially drop the iPhone when opening the box. It’s literally the first thing that you see after opening the top of the box. If you’re not prepared, its inaugural flight could be towards the floor (or worse). See the video below:

Not willing to risk any chance of damage, I opened the box while seated at our dining table.

Below you can see a size comparison between the iPhone4 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

Overall, the device feels comfortable in my hands. One of my concerns is the iPhone 6 Plus’s smooth back – which makes it more difficult to grip than the earlier models. In order to minimize any potential damage due to a fall, we will be purchasing an iPhone case very soon. In portrait mode, the keyboard is quite nice and comfortable to type on. The same can’t be said for typing in landscape mode, which feels a little clunky by comparison.

There are still a few rough edges with both iOS and a few of the apps I used on the iPhone 6 Plus, due in no small part to its larger size. I’m confident that these items will be hammered out soon.

We haven’t tested the camera, gaming, or other detailed aspects of the phone yet. Visually, the iPhone 6 Plus’s screen is crisp and sharp and a pleasure to read text on. The iPhone 6 Plus’s speakers have a more full sound when compared to the tinny sound that emanates from the iPhone4’s speakers.

Aarti noted the significant speed increase and overall responsiveness of her new iPhone. I’m most curious to find out her thoughts on the device after she’s had more time to use it. Expect a follow-up post in about a month’s time on that subject.

So far, initial impressions are good ones. Let’s hope that perception continues.
