A few weeks back, Tom Racine, of Tall Tale Radio fame (BTW, congrats on 100 shows, Tom!), held a fund raiser of sorts to raise money to attend this year’s New York Comic Con. One of the fund raiser items was Lucas Turnbloom‘s outstandingly funny Imagine This webcomic. Having been an admirer of Mr. Turnbloom’s work for some time, and what with the purchase being for a good cause and all, I immediately ordered my copy.
I haven’t had a chance to read it as yet, but I couldn’t wait to share the really awesome sketch of Clovis that was included in my edition. Thanks Lucas!
Be sure to check out Imagine This. You’re gonna love it (seriously!).

My workstation area can be an eyesore at times, and not because of the clutter on my desk. Besides the slew of hardware (tablet, external drives, camera, speakers) that occupy a place on my tabletop are the inevitable cornucopia of cables and wires. Today I decided to do something about it, so I took a trip to Sweden (okay, Ikea). While I didn’t have to travel across the pond and put up with being in coach, it took me just as long to drive to the store, shop around, and return home. (The upside? No TSA search.)
And while Ikea is literally the valhalla of household stuff (you can find everything you need to furnish your home), I have a certain hate for it at the same time. Every single time I enter an Ikea store, I feel like spending more money than I want to. I find myself trying to rationalize purchases for things I don’t quite need, but seemingly can’t live without. The place is laid out like a beautiful, but enormous, lab rat maze (complete with a snack bar stationed at the end). Clearly, Swedish people are onto something good with this place. (or maybe we Americans are just part of a Swedish experiment?)
But I digress…
I have no latent skill in building things. Or, to clarify, I have no handyman skills whatsoever. (Computers and tech are a different story.) Thankfully, the people at Ikea are great at reading my mind, because building or assembling any Ikea product comes in at just a tad more complicated than stacking a successive set of LEGO Duplo blocks.
The Signum cable management kit I purchased ran me $15. Included with the parts was a comic book. Well, maybe that’s being a bit generous. There were elements of comics to be found in the illustrated guide, and I’ll leave it at that:
Here are some photos of the cable management process as it was coming together. In the first two photos, I’d just completed the install. The installation itself was simple, but the toughest part of it was screwing the wood screws upside down into the desk. I have a primitive manual screwdriver, so I had to channel my chi at numerous times to work the wood screws into the wooden surface.
The remaining photos show the cable management kit in “action”, with various cables and surge protectors tucked in it for good measure.
No more unsightly wires on the floor. Mission accomplished. Oh, and I almost forgot. I also picked up a 6-port power adapter. It takes any 2 channel power plug and converts it into 6 channels. Total cost: only $1.99. This was an impulse buy (gotta live a little…)
The Signum cable management unit gets a whopping 5/5 Bob Weiners!

Are Swedish people awesome, or what?

This morning, at 8:25AM, someone with the account: anitamirdad@live.com stole $204.25 from my Paypal account. I can only assume that this thief hacked into my account somehow to do this. I have reported this to the authorities and Paypal. At this point, I don’t have any recourse until Paypal attempts to contact the person and conduct an investigation.
The lessons I’ve learned from this whole experience (so far) are:
1) Never keep too much money in your Paypal account. I have learned (the hard way) to regularly transfer Paypal funds and place them into my bank account once I’ve reached more than $25 in my Paypal account.
2) Create a separate checking account that is DEPOSIT ONLY. Thankfully, our reps at Suntrust Bank recommended this for us when we told them our intentions to create an account for our Paypal earnings.
3) It can happen to you. Change your password. Now.
My password is somewhat difficult to crack, so I’m guessing that the thief in question found another vulnerability to exploit to get access to my account.
I am hoping beyond hope that I can get my funds back. And I hope that karma will catch up with the low-life who stole my funds.

Update: Paypal was able to recover my funds entirely. Thank you, Paypal!
At last, the stunning conclusion to the Pam / Grampa storyline. Nothing will remain the same… Feel free to discuss. I am most curious about your thoughts…

P.S. I updated panel 1 up above. Below was the original version. I wasn’t too crazy about Pam’s pose so I went back and changed it.
Have you ever tossed old tech hardware and later regretted making that choice? If so, what was it?
I’m somewhat of a hardware pack rat, but I do regret relinquishing my first generation iPod to my sister. It was later stolen / lost during Hurricane Katrina. I’ve kept most of my other gear, just because I can’t bear to toss a perfectly working piece of kit. What about you?

Here’s a piece featuring Grampa and Bob that I drew as part of a recent Artist Edition order of “Rebootus Maximus”. The piece was inked using Pitt artist pens on bristol board. And here’s the final piece, with some extra embellishments added:

It’s been a pretty hectic weekend at home – so I haven’t had my usual Sunday to devote towards making comics. Not wanting to disappoint, I went through my single panel archives and revamped an older ‘toon. Below is the original:
Enjoy!

One of my students, Trung Dang, created this incredible 3D model of Bob that I wanted to share.
Trung captured the quintessential Bob in these renders and I want to sincerely thank him for allowing me to share his work. I strongly urge you to visit his portfolio website to see more of his amazing work. He’ll be graduating in a few quarters, so if your company is looking for a talented 3D artist, you would be wise to hire him!
Thanks, Trung!

Characters evolve, and for me, it’s usually from drawing them over and over again. Here’s a few sketches of Apchuck I drew this afternoon to refine his design a bit more. Color plates and inks coming soon.
