Revival of an Animation Desk: Complete!

Today, I scored a beautiful plexiglass section for my newly acquired animation desk – for the whopping price of $5.00 at Lowe’s. How’d I get the plexiglass so cheap? It turns out there was a scrap that was roughly 1″ larger than the dimensions I was looking for. The folks at Lowe’s couldn’t sell it new, so they asked if I’d be interested in taking it off their hands for 5 bucks.

Heck yeah!

Talk about being at the right place at the right time :)

The “new” desk is set up in my studio now. The total cost out of pocket to bring this desk back to “like new” state was under $9, including the cost for the fine grain sandpaper I purchased to smooth out the surface.

Evening Inking Fun Times

This evening I’ve been catching up with fulfilling book orders from the week. As you know, all Artist Edition orders of the first PC Weenies book “Rebootus Maximus” will receive an inked sketch of the PCW character of your choice on bristol as well as a sketch in your book. The process to create the bristol sketch requires that I properly plan out what I’m going to draw. I create the roughs on a separate 8.5″ x 11″ blank paper to work out the dynamics of the pose.

When I’m satisfied with the roughs, I redraw the sketch on bristol board using a non-photo blue pencil. Inks are applied with Prismacolor Premier brush pens. I use both thin and “wedge” shaped brush pens. The thin pens are used for outlines while the wedge pen is used for fills. It generally takes me a few days after an order is received to fulfill it, so I can give each piece the attention it deserves. Anyhow, here’s a new piece I worked on tonight:

Variations on a Bob

I was doodling a few examples to show my class tomorrow when I came up with these variations of Bob. I’m considering the idea of making a new “Bob” each week, inking and coloring them for inclusion in a big Bob poster print that I could make for sale. I could do a “Bob around the world” theme with Bob in various cultural costumes. And Zombie Bob, of course.

The TGT Webcomics Interview!

If there’s one definitive show focusing on interviewing webcartoonists, it would be the TGT Webcomics podcast, with host Kurt Sasso. Last night, I had the pleasure of talking with Kurt and guest co-host Joel Watson. The conversation was informal in tone, but very informative and entertaining, and I had a blast (thanks, Kurt!). It wasn’t your typical interview, and that’s what made the episode a lot of fun for me to participate on. Webcartoonists may find the episode particularly interesting, as we talk about promotion, art school, the arduous process of self-publishing a book, and why Joel and I go with a digital workflow.

I’ve been taking in all the brouhaha over the latest iPhone. It’s been a very interesting story to follow, to say the least. Many people have reported the antenna attenuation issue, and Apple’s response has been that other companies, like RIM and Nokia, also suffer the same type of problem. (RIM and Nokia have since responded to Job’s comments.)

I don’t have an iPhone 4 (or any iPhone for that matter), so I can’t comment first hand on the issue. But that doesn’t mean I couldn’t have some fun with it. I’ll leave the debate up to you, dear reader, if you wish to share your thoughts on the latest iPhone news story. Is Apple right? Or is it a “smoke-and-mirrors” move by the Cupertino company? Sound off in the comments below!

pcweenies.com gets a new coat of paint!

This weekend, I spent a few hours handling site maintenance chores. I’ve upgraded all my sites to the latest version of WordPress (3.0, at this writing), and encountered nary a hiccup in the process (though I did have to disable WP-Supercache before doing the upgrade). While I was on a web fixing kick, I also made some necessary updates to the PC Weenies site. The new coat of paint may be the most noticeable change, but I’ve also done a few things to streamline your navigation throughout the site.

The biggest change you’ll notice is the small navigation bar below each comic. These items were previously on the sidebar, and – to be honest, I think most people never paid attention to them. The revised placement should help.

One thing I wish I could add back to the site is the ability to e-mail your favorite ‘toon to a friend, and have the button directly under each comic. The technical voodoo required to re-enable such a feature (long a staple on the old PC Weenies site) is a bit beyond my capacity. Maybe there’s a clever WordPress plugin that will let me do that?
