when all else fails, add a fan?
This one reminds me somewhat of the one from September 27 2009.
It’s not the fact that he jammed in a PCI-Express into the DIMM slot that’s impressive, because it is… It’s the fact that he didn’t stop when he heard the little cries of the computer saying… “Please, for the love of my circuit board! Make the hurting stop…”
Most of my support calls almost start in this same fashion. I’m usually introduced the problem with, “I was having an issue and decided I could fix it myself, and now it doesn’t……” I had a guy that is somewhat PC Saavy…or so I thought, go as far as pull the posts off a DVI-I connector to get it to fit into DVI-D Port, only to realize it still wasn’t going to fit so he was hitting it from the back side trying to get it to pry on. Fortunately I stopped him and it only ruined the DVI-I adapter and not the DVI-D port….fortunately. I even had a guy that custom built a system for himself, and crammed so much stuff in it that he had to keep the sides off and run an exterior fan directly on it to keep it from over heating and burning up the system board. He was so impressed with the speed, that he didn’t bother to think about the long term effect of such heat on the processor and other components. To say the least his days of super hot, super fast computing lasted about 9 months. Roughly 8.5 months long than I would have expected.
It’s a scary world out there when people venture into things on their own without researching or asking for help.
Third rule of hardware: Static discharge is a myth
there is the basic rule of mechanical engineering, which applies here…
force and duct tape are the only tools you will ever need.
