I just caught wind of a recent article which describes a teenager buying the three available iPad models with the sole purpose of destroying them. On the one hand, perhaps it’s a cathartic reaction to crass consumerism. On the other, I can only figure that the guy was just a d-bag.
Really. What was the point? What type of statement was made by destroying three perfectly functioning devices?
If money’s really burning a hole in peoples’ pockets, there are plenty of worthwhile non-profit organizations that could benefit from a donation. What a waste.

The only approved way to destroy shiny symbols of rampant consumerism is to place them in a blender and to turn the blender on. The irony is that this act is *also* a symbol of rampant consumerism, so…yeah. :P

This has been going on for quite a while. There is a website (http://smashsomestuff.com) that actually gathers money from the readers simply in order to buy the new tech toys and destroy them in front of cameras the day of the launch. I first thought the iPad one was part of it but it appears the site stopped destroying stuff last year. That site must be having clones now..
We may find it totally stupid but it appears it is a form on entertainment where there are people ready to pay to see…
To me, it’s all part of the Reality stuff we have on TV (Survivor, Big Brother, Amish in the City…), anything is marketable nowadays.
The “Will It Blend?” folks already have their video up YouTube of an iPad being blenderized. They had to break it in half to fit in the blender jar, so to me, that does not count.
Well, isn’t that the most effective way of getting a picture of an iPad with a shattered screen to use as the background for a theme to make the iPads look smashed?
Yeah, I agree … that’s nearly $1500 that could’ve gone to support any number of education, equal rights, or economic-based community initiatives …
