I’m very disappointed in the iPad. It’s just a jumbo iPod Touch. I was hoping for a tablet Mac, not a stupid music/video player tied into iTunes Store and limiting choice of programs to what Apple allows to be sold (not to mention requiring development in Cocoa – yechh). It wouldn’t even be a good organizer. Yes, I have looked into third-party PDA software for the iPhone/iPod Touch – it’s all crap. And this from the company that produced the Newton. (sigh)

What (exactly) are you disappointed in with the iPad? I think many people are disappointed that it didn’t fulfill their wildest fantasies of what a tablet computer could be. (And thus they are actually disappointed in themselves for dreaming the impossible dream.)

By and large, it’s pretty much just what I expected. I anticipated something more like the Lenovo U1 Hybrid convertiblelaptop/tablet — I wanted something with the tablet strengths *and* the ability to run Photoshop and Dreamweaver in some capacity — and I’m boggled that it doesn’t have a webcam. The first, I’ll trade off gladly for the price being under $1000.

Overall, satisfied and wanting one (but will wait until my own August birthday).

My wife’s been asking me for about a year or so now “do you know what you want for your birthday?” for the birthday that just went by this past August, and I’ve been saying “I don’t know”.

Now I know. I think it looks like a fun, new toy.

Of course, now to keep it a secret from her nephew, or he’ll be distracted looking at Apple’s website for months and never study for his XII standard exams…

I’m more worried it’s going to fail and then kill the tablet sector because everyone will say “apple tried it and failed”. Then we’ll go another 10 years before it’s tried again.

I don’t plan on getting one. I wanted a Windows Tablet for a while but couldn’t justify the price because I like the ability to actually write on the surface and have my handwriting recognized and converted to text. That way I could split typing and hand writing things and reduce carpal tunnel.

The form factor is nice, and if I didn’t have a laptop I might consider it, but for what it offers I don’t see any real need for myself. We’ll see what the next generation brings about.

You can’t mention the S word. Dontcha know resistive touch screens are taboo ever since the iTouch came out?

FWIW I think there is a market for both types of screens which is why stylus input devices have been so popular in medical and electrical workplaces. Maybe instead of a tablet you might instead dream of a canvas running microsoft surface…

I was really hoping that the device would come with a stylus where one could sketch using the tablet. If it had a decent resolution and pressure sensitivity, it could have been a Cintiq killer. Right now, I’m just on the sidelines, watching how 3rd development plays out.

For what it is, I think it’s a good start. That doesn’t mean I’m going to buy one. It’s priced a few dollars more than a Kindle (though I expect the Kindle to drop its pricing really soon now). I think adding a camera would be a worthwhile feature. I guess I’m optimistic. If nothing else, I hope that other companies will innovate and trump Apple. (Competition is a good thing, right?)

Really? You like it? I would rate it as the biggest dissapoinment since the Apple boombox or whatever that thing was called.
