Inspired by an article I read on Human3rror, I’ve taken a snapshot of my desktop.
(Above: my main 30″ display)
(Above: my second monitor, a 19″ display)
I am a neat freak when it comes to my desktop. I *HATE* having icons (outside of my hard drive icons) on the desktop. Every file is properly organized to the point where I don’t have to use Spotlight to find what I’m looking for. Ironically, I can’t say the same about my “real world” desktop, which is usually in a state of flux. (I’d love to be able to use Google search for finding stuff in my house.)
How about you? Are you a neat freak on the desktop? Or do you operate better with clutter? Sound off in the comments below.

CLEAN!
I’m messy. Both with my desktop and with my living space.
Neat freak, with my desktop as well as studio space! I think more people are in today’s world, but growing up I just thought I was weird!
TEEHEE! :)
wow… that is some serious clean desktopage…
Definitely a neat freak. I use my desktop as a staging area for stuff I’m working on, but once I get a chance to deal with it I move it into it’s proper place. Same thing at my house. I’m a neat freak and I use my desk as the staging area.
Can you please define the word “Neat”? :P
My desktop is a total mess… Hey, my wallpaper is a irrelevant picture that ended up there once after I hit the wrong option when right-clicking on it…
I’ve removed my drive icons and my “wallpaper” is “4c4c4c”. But I do have a great login screen wallpaper (can be changed with something like TinkerTool System).
Desktop is messy, gets cleaned about once a year, which is once a year more than I backup my stuff.
House is messy, but computer space isn’t, although that’s because it’s a streamlined cabinet space, and my chair is an armchair.
Clean, unless I’m using it for a workflow at the time, in which case i eventually remember to clean it up again..
Also, do I recognise the Moeraki boulders on your secondary monitor?
The only icon I have on my desktop(s) is the Photoshop Elements icon, so I can open PS by dragging and dropping the graphic(s) onto it.
My desktop is like over half full with icons. What is the point of having such a clean desktop? I’d rather have a ton of files at my fingertips than look at some picture.
I like a little mess in my life. If I don’t see my “To Do”s, they don’t get done. I can never find my way back to interesting bits on the web, so something to receive a fast fly by gets dropped on the desk for tomorrow not the addressbook or it’s never visited again. Also certain downloaded programs for me to read the manual & test to see if they do something I need or like, are left on the desk so it gets read, & if interesting after reading, after back up, tested. When I was “neat” topside, the drive got full & the stuff didn’t get done. I regret a little blockage on my screen pictures, but computers are meant to be useful. ;)
Messy….folders and files all over the desktop.
I try to keep it neat, but eventually files clutter up and I eventually can’t put up with and spend a little bit putting them all away only to start up again :P
Definitely neat – I read an article on Desktop Zen a few years back and have never looked back. Nothing on my desktop at all; just an ever changing background.

Great article, Matt. Thanks for sharing that link!
I don’t keep files on my Desktop, but I do keep program links. That’s what they’re there for.
My desktop would probably send you screaming for your life…..total mess, but I love it that way!
