2.4Ghz Celeron, 512MB RAM Shared w/Intel 82945G chipset, WinXP Pro running scripts at startup (?!), and these workstations are all prone to low memory errors after we’ve pulled up all of our tools.

I got to pick it. I was given a budget and told go to it.
Dell Vostro 1710, Intel Core Duo 2GHz w/ 2 gig RAM and a Nividia Geoforce 8600. They gave me the new computer (laptop) when they moved my department into a new building.
I’ve been asking for a Mac ever since I got here, and don’t see why I can’t get one since they buy them for the graphic arts folks . But I can’t really complain–they took my old piece of crap away. I got lucky–there was a lottery for the laptops
But I still bring my Macbook Pro to work because it’s easier for me to record my podcast lectures on it.

No choice for me, stuck with some black Dell desktop running Windows XP. Piece of junk. All my company’s marketing material shows young, attractive people with Macintosh laptops, and I keep arguing that they should represent us, and we should have Macs, but no go… As a Java developer, I’d probably be more productive with one, but my non-technical manager doesn’t know how we’d get all the meeting requests if we didn’t have Outlook (and doesn’t understand when I say I’d be more productive without the meeting requests).

The one, sole perk of being the only guy in a small family business who knows how to do more with a PC than turn it on is that all our machines are hand-built by me :)
Hand built with almost no budget, mind you, but at least that means I know how to rebuild them if (when) someone manages to kill off the OS- which is still XP….

We got a choice between Windows, Linux or Mac. I use an older HP Desktop, P4 2.8Ghz, 2GB RAM running Ubuntu, and a Macbook Pro 15″. I take the Macbook home and hook them both up using Synergy when I’m at work.

Dell Optiplex 755 Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3GHz with 4GB of RAM with XP. We put in suggestions for what we want our admin machines to have, but we only get Dells. I run virtual boxes of Ubuntu, Server 2008, and have a Windows 7 box for testing.

i have a dell optiplex GX620 – XP with 3GHz and 4GB RAM. it’s the same machine that i’ve had since i started at this job 3 years ago. but really, it does fine. visual studio 2008 struggles a bit on it, but it manages to chug along decently for the most part (except when the company’s antivirus software runs).
just recently got the dual monitor support, and that’s something i’ve been trying to get for years.

I had a tight budget but spent my money well. 2.4 GHz Core2 Quad, 4 GB RAM, Gigabyte Mobo, 22″W Acer LCD. NewEgg rocks!
Built it myself in an old Compaq case. Dual boot XP & Vista 64.
I’m one of two IT guys + a developer.

Dell Optiplex 745 (WinXP), MacBook unibody aluminum (Mac OS X Snow Leopard), Dell Precision 380 (CentOS 5.3), Dell Precision 380 (whatever *nix OS I am currently developing for). Four machines, four monitors, one keyboard & mouse. Man, I love Synergy.
