Wii Unboxing

It’s been almost a year since I purchased a Nintendo Wii. It’s the first console I’ve owned since the Super Nintendo, and arguably the best console I’ve enjoyed playing since my Colecovision days.

Let me start by saying that I am not a hardcore gamer. I am very much the casual gamer – I play games to unwind and relax. I’m not into first person shooters or graphically violent games. I prefer platform and puzzle type games. What attracted me to the Nintendo Wii was the unique controller.

Since owning the Wii, I have added the following games:

  • Wario Shake It
  • Mario Kart
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • the Wii Fit

Each of the games I’ve owned I’ve enjoyed immensely. They were easy to get into and difficult to master. In the past, I’ve been intimidated by consoles such as the Playstation and XBOX because of having to remember all sorts of button combinations. With the Wii, the game control is more-or-less very good. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty darn close.

The Nintendo Wii has also gotten Aarti interested in gaming. She particularly enjoys the Wii Fit, which we purchased for her birthday last week. We’ve both gotten a good workout with the Wii. What we like the most about it is the appeal of the games (they’re fun and challenging) and the fact that we can monitor our progress. I’ve never been particularly interested in exercising before, but the fact that I can now ‘compete’ with my wife and measure our results has made exercise enjoyable. And that translates to me wanting to work out more.

I think Nintendo hit a home run with the Wii. It’s not perfect (I wish it could play DVDs and stream video…), but it does what I want it to. A year later, I have no regrets on buying it.
