How will “true cloud computing” stop that problem? Cloud computing has nothing to do with the fact that new devices will still be produced, and people will still buy them, ie all the people who need the shiniest, newest iPhone every six months

(don’t even get me started on Apples “Now with video” and “Cut-and-Paste!” Everyone else has had that for ages, but it’s more “hip” when Apple (finally) gets it.)

but I digress…

Also, “public community access” is not going to stop people from buying all the aforementioned devices.

Well, of course we use energy while using the internet, but we would use much more if we didn’t have the internet.
For example, it takes much less energy (and here I mean physical energy, not only personal) to send someone an e-mail than sending a letter…
And of course it is much cleaner to read a comic online than having it printed and mailed to your house.

Finally, there are all those tips and tricks available on the internet that can help you leading a greener life.

Hahahaa, nice comic Krishna. It reminds me of conversations my brother and I would have about hipsters at a coffee shop we used to hang out in.

They would espouse all the typical “green” tenets which are in vogue; hybrids, the environment, etc. They never stop to think, coal is being burned somewhere to charge that electric / hybrid car.

They also don’t write their blogs on wood-burning Macs, so they are using power there also.

I disagree that the carbon footprint is that low right now and will be later. When you think of it it, there are a a ton of devices/hardware (netbooks,pda’s,routers etc.) created for simply connecting to the internet. Most often these devices end up in our landfills 2 years later. Until a true cloud computing along with greater public community access is created, it will likely get much much worse.
