Lol, indeed. The great debate between open-source and proprietary systems software. Proprietary systems (read: Mac OS, Windows, UNIX) are consistently reliable and/or unreliable at any given time, but given some time you can find someone who will be able to help you work through most problems.

Open-source systems (read: Linux) can be the greatest thing you’ve ever found in your life… or the biggest headache you’ve ever experienced. Linux is, in my experience, very polarizing.

I believe it is highly unlikely that the average American consumer (I cannot speak for any other countries) will find Linux superior to Windows in the near future. There is no such thing as an idiot-proof piece of software, but there are SO MANY variants of Linux that reliable tech support for any given flavor of it is very hard to come by.

And if Linux ever becomes mainstream, will there be so many popular flavors of it that the computing world will someday resemble the political climate of Italy?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Heh, this is part of why I don’t force Linux down people’s throats …
The inevitable tech-support!

Although, these days it’s not a really big deal…
8-10 years ago it was, and I spent a lot of time doing that!
Now I’m older, lazier, and Linux is much more mature :-)
