Buy Nothing Day was created in direct response as a protest against consumerism. The event is observed on the Friday after American Thanksgiving in the US. Maybe you saw the ads for it on TV?

Probably not.

The overall goal of this organization is to create a commitment among people to consume less and, thusly, produce less waste. Whether you agree with them or not, the concept was tempting for me to tackle in the context of today’s comic.
