The Maxtor drive I reviewed a few days ago does, in fact, support booting. By factory default, the drive comes formatted as FAT32. When I ran Disk Utility, I had to specify “GUID partition table” and HFS+ extended as my formatting options. After a reformat using those settings, the drive now shows up as a possible start-up drive.
